Recurring abdominal pain in children.
1. Big picture
Recurring abdominal pain in children is a common pediatric complaint, but the examiner wants you to separate:
Functional abdominal pain
from
organic abdominal pain with red flags
Most children with recurrent abdominal pain have a functional gastrointestinal disorder, but the diagnosis must be made positively and safely, not simply by saying “nothing is wrong.”
The clinical task is:
Recognize the pain pattern
→ look for red flags
→ assess growth and development
→ do targeted investigations only when indicated
→ treat constipation, diet triggers, stress, and functional pain mechanisms
→ do not miss surgical, inflammatory, renal, gynecologic, or metabolic disease
